A List of Family-Friendly Parks in the Winchester, VA Area
This list is not strictly within the Winchester city limits but as someone who grew up in the area I can tell you these are all close and nice enough to warrant the drive! I often see moms talking or asking about parks in community groups (if you're looking for these I can get you pointed in the right direction) and thought I'd put together this resource just for Winchester area parents.
I've included a little blurb about each park as well as links where you can find more info. Just click the title for the precise location/address.
All of these parks have restrooms or port-a-johns and some type of playground equipment, and each one boasts something more unique ranging from train caboose to splash pad to paved trails, so it's worth reading the info below the titles.
They all have free entry and are some of my family's favorites. If I've forgotten one that you think should be on this list, please let me know!
Jim Barnett Park
Jim Barnett park is the easy first mention. It's right in the middle of Winchester and boasts a variety of attractions from large playground to pond to outdoor and indoor pools and more! It's a very popular park, and I like their toddler playground area. If you're interested in local history check out Abram's Delight while you're there also. It's a paved stroller-push away from the park.
Sherando Park
Sherando park is located in Stephens City (note: not Stephenson!) and it's not far from Winchester!
Baseball and soccer fields, a small, quiet lake with trails, pavilions, a large playground (kids especially love this one!) and other smaller play equipment areas dispersed throughout the park, plus a large outdoor pool and more. It has a small section of play equipment geared more for toddlers and isn't quite as close to more trafficked areas as Jim Barnett park is.
Clearbrook Park
Clearbrook park is a quick jog down 81 (or through Stephenson) toward West Virginia and is known for it's lake/pond, fun vintage train caboose (which kids can climb on!) and beautiful lights display at Christmastime. It has pavilions and play equipment also. As a mom it's not my personal favorite play equipment *for young toddlers,* but I still go there with my family for fishing, at Christmas, to see the train, or just for somewhere different.
Chet Hobert Park
I couldn't find a great page to link to for this one either, but Chet Hobert park is a nice park so don't let that deter you! With beautiful walking trails (I take a jogging stroller), a great sandbox, nice playground equipment and more we have made the drive to Berryville for this one!
Rockland Park
Rockland park is located in the Riverton area toward Front Royal. I personally love it for the location (surrounded by woods, fields and mountains) and for the berries we can always find there in summer. The walking trails are paved so it's convenient for strollers, bikes or scooters and the playground is great, too.
Fantasyland Park
Again, I didn't find a great site with photos to link to for this one but it will get you to the location (you can do a google search for photos though). Fantasyland park has a wooden "castle" section I played on myself as a kid, but also a newer modern section. The wooden section is semi-fenced, which makes life easier for the toddler parents! My kids and I both absolutely love this park and pro tip: bring towels, sunscreen and a change of clothes for the splash pad in the summer! Check the hours before getting the kids excited though, the splash pad isn't operating all the time. There is also a nearby creek and large pavilion.
Rose Hill Park
Rose Hill has a limited amount of play equipment (climbing boulders and swings) but has a scenic gravel walking trail which can be navigated with a jogging stroller or wagon. Bathrooms and a pavilion are also located just next to the parking area. We like to go here for quiet walks or mommy meet-ups with friends to get some exercise away from the noise of town.
